The peak shaver is Gasunie’s (the Netherlands state owned gas company) LNG installation on the Maasvlakte, which can be brought into action to transport extra natural gas to the Randstad. Liquid gas (Liquefied Natural Gas), which can be re-gasified at times of peak demand and then introduced into Gasunie’s gas transport network, is stored in tanks at this installation. The peak shaver has a maximum capacity production of 1.3 million m3 per hour. The port of Rotterdam has the intention to enable the integration of biomass storage silos for GDF Suez in the near vicinity in such a way that NGU needs to surrender a strip of land. Combined with NGU’s ambition to extend the long term landlease after 2023, conditions on both sides of the table create a challenging problem set. A Stig consultant was involved as principal negotiator.
