In March 2013, StigΔ partner Onno Roelofs adressed the South African DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) as keynote speaker on the development of special economic zones in Johannesburg.
Roelofs, on invitation by the DTI (the South African Department of Trade and Industry), presented his view on the development of special economic zones across the country during a capacity building workshop. The keynote included topics such as:
- Developing integrated, comprehensive and strategic and long term development plans for Special Economic Zones;
- Defining goals, priorities, vision and directions of a Special Economic Zone;
- Developing a Master Plan that is sustainable while preserving the flexibility to respond to changing local and regional economies;
- Key areas: Land use planning, connectivity (roads, rails, ports, airports), hard & soft infrastructure, financial and economic analysis, investment promotion, sector development, skills development, institutional arrangements, generating spillovers to local economy.
