The Chennai port includes an unloading facility for coal that is no longer in use. The reason is the nuisance of dust to nearby residential and commercial areas. The Indian consultant Alaia Solutions has been commissioned to prepare an environmental management plan which (with the approval of the Supreme Court) once again should enable the shipment of coal. Alaia has enlisted the support of StigΔ because of earlier experiences with developments in Rotterdam. Alaia developed a plan based on environmental management that fits within the legal framework, but which still allows an economical viable activity. Among other things, the commercial and environmental performance of the Rotterdam-based EMO (Europe's largest bulk terminal) is used as a benchmark.
